Light as a Living Material

First, I discover the material and spend time with it.
Minutes, hours, days, weeks, years.
Then something activates. I begin to cut, shape, look and listen. I improvise, but attention to detail and the ability to engineer a form are equally important.
Much of the wood is centuries-old longleaf pine, reclaimed from old buildings.
Its grain is pronounced, dense and resinous. This is where the piece begins to speak to me. Like a puzzle, the possibilities seem endless, yet everything is already framed by the life of the tree.
Bamboo is another material I have lived with for decades—growing it, watching it, listening to it. Some becomes sound, some sculpture, some a reliquary illuminated from within.
What it says remains open.
